Beginner Arabic

Introduction to reading, writing, speaking and understanding modern standard Arabic. This course is proficiency based. It aims to place the student in the context of the native speaking environment.

The course focuses on:

1. developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Modern Standard Arabic;
2. expressing oneself and participate in simple one-to-one conversations involving basic practical and social situations;
3. practicing basic grammatical structures through exploring the drills, exercises and class discussion, students will develop basic communicative skills and learn the fundamental structure of basic sentences;
4. understanding Arab culture through class materials, discussion, Internet, film and interviews.

ELEMENTARY ARABIC

This elementary course is for students who have successfully completed Beginner Arabic Course or its equivalent, or native or heritage speakers who can understand Arabic minimally and produce simple sentences.

The course focuses on:

• attaining proficiency in participating in topics related daily activities and personal environment;
• initiating and sustaining complicated communicative exchange;
• creating with the language and communicating personal meaning to both sympathetic and non-sympathetic interlocutors.
• satisfying personal needs and social demands to survive in an Arabic speaking setting.

INTERMEDIATE ARABIC 1

This is an intermediate level course offered only for students who have completed Elementary Arabic Course or its equivalent successfully.

The course focuses on enhancing the abilities to:

• create with the language and communicate personal meaning effectively;
• satisfy personal needs and social demands to survive in an Arabic speaking environment;
• read and writing narrative of limited complication.

INTERMEDIATE ARABIC 2

This class aims to help develop students’ abilities in Modern Standard Arabic, with a focus on reading, writing, listening, speaking, and culture. Through participation in class, homework and extra-curricular activities, students go from mid-intermediate to an high-intermediate level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The class will be conducted in Arabic except in special circumstances. The class will take an interactive approach, incorporating group work, individual exercises, presentations, class discussions, and homework.

ADVANCED ARABIC 1

Arabic Advanced 1 is the fifth course in the series of Arabic language courses offered at Cambridge University and has a prerequisite of Intermediate Arabic 2 or its equivalent. The course is proficiency based, covering all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). By the end of this course, students can expect to know most of the grammar of a high intermediate level of ACTFL proficiency in Arabic. In this course, we will study the structure of the Arabic language, further develop skills in reading and listening to authentic texts (with and without the aid of a dictionary) and work on expanding the range of conversational topics on which students can comfortably converse. We will further our acquaintance with aspects of Arab culture through the exploration of Arabic-language media recommended by the eminent teachers of the Institute of oriental studies in Tashkent.

ADVANCED ARABIC 2

Advanced Arabic 2 is the sixth course in a series of Arabic language courses offered at Cambridge University and has a prerequisite of Advanced Arabic 1 or its equivalent. The course and its readings are taught in Modern Standard Arabic. The course is proficiency based, covering all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). By the end of the course, students are expected to reach the level of an advanced low level of ACTFL proficiency in Arabic. The course is designed in a way to practice reading, conversing about and/or listening to a variety of literary genres: prehistoric poetry, travel narratives, media, contemporary poetry, plays and fiction from different Arab countries. At this level, students should expect emphasis to be placed on analyzing the aesthetic, cultural, and social dimensions of the texts studied.

TOPICS IN ARABIC

This course is taught in Arabic and is for students who have studied the modern standard Arabic language for at least three years. It exposes students to literary texts from a range of genres and periods, including the Jahili poetry of Umru'ul Qais, medieval allegory by Ibn Al Muqaffa, and the contemporary work of Naguib Mahfouz, Mahmoud Darwish and Saadallah Wannous. The course material also includes a feature film that will be analyzed from the social and cultural perspectives.
